"Just use a filter"

Not everyone has the knowledge on how to make one, and not every Fedi software implements it in the same way. Using and making a filter implies that the person knows what the filter will be about, what keywords everyone *will* use, and that it will not generate false positives.

It is also a subtle way of pushing the responsibility back to the people asking, which is to disregard their request to CW the stuff.

You will not post about a topic with the same words. Heck, you will sometimes use too little words for a filter to trigger. You say to make a filter, but how do you expect it to work when you're going to reference things that, without context, would appear to not be part of a topic that everyone CWs, but with topic, it is?

This is a group effort. And Fedi is not Twitter.

@ShadowJonathan I can't even use filters, but I don't think those people care if the solution works as long as it isn't their problem

@ShadowJonathan content warnings make fedi a more accessible platform

I'm sure I'm guilty of not using them enough but

this can be a platform built on respect for others, where people with all sorts of trauma can be amongst us and safe

that's something worth fighting for

@ShadowJonathan CWing posts should really be enforced as a moderation thing. I know nsfw is pretty heavily enforced, but stuff like politics, disturbing stuff and common triggers for people should probably also have enforced cws across instances. And by "enforced" I just mean post deletion of un-cw'd posts like what currently exists for nsfw commonly, I doubt anyone is going to stop federation with other instances over it being an issue

@lucxx eh, I don't know if I'll agree with that

Currently on tech.lgbt we only enforce CWs for NSFW, but we deliberately recommend (not enforce) CWs for politics

This is for a lot of reasons, but most important of all we want our community to CW those kinds of things out of their own volition, not because we tell them to, because else it'll always be a false or enforced reason

For NSFW we have enough reasons that we need to enforce it (from practical, network, and intimacy perspectives), but for politics we kinda really don't, while we think it would improve the mood, so that's why we have a nuance there

@ShadowJonathan So there's a factor of reasoning that determines what should be enforced as a cw, and that probably differs between admin teams of instances, interesting...

forestine

@ShadowJonathan i'm a heavy filter user and i cannot keep up with making filters with the number of possible u.s. candidates, and all these people's names. i don't live in the u.s. i don't know who these people are to put them on the list

@forestine Yeah, avoid US pol
isn’t an option at all πŸ˜…

@ShadowJonathan The problem with CW is that you end up putting CW on everything.

I’ve seen some for Β« food Β», Β« eye contact Β», and even things like Β« car Β».

I use filters, and sometimes see things I don’t want to, but I just ignore it. You can ignore it. This is possible.

@tisha @ShadowJonathan "Just ignore it" is downplaying the issue. People that don't want to see it or can't handle seeing it shouldn't have to see it. Be explicit so that filters actually can make up for where content warnings are missed. Instead of just posting a picture with no alt text & no post text, say "Look at this food I made!" & add the alt text "A plate of food. It's a sandwich with wheat bread, lettuce, & ham.", now if you forget to add a content warning it's very easy to catch with filters because the subject is directly mentioned in the post.

@jackemled @ShadowJonathan I always put text and alt to give context, but I almost never CW, because I don't post anything NSFW or gory or shocking.

I think these are good intentions, but I also think that no one can expect the whole world to adapt to them. If you think it should, then absolutely every toot in the entire fediverse should be CW, and it doesn't make sense anymore.

@tisha @ShadowJonathan I don't use euphemisms & I add a content warning if my post contains anything I can see as sensitive or edit it to add a content warning when someone tells me that a post upset them & how I can put a proper content warning on it. Not every post would have a content warning if people did that; entirely mundane things like "Look at my new Minecraft house :)" aren't going to upset anyone. If I think a post I make can upset someone I add a content warning, if someone tells me a post upset them I add a content warning.

@jackemled @ShadowJonathan Unfortunaly, I think that everything will upset someone.

Right now on my timeline, I have a CW for... a selfie. A simple selfie. Maybe CW'ed for the people who... don't see any human face in their entire life? I don't get it.

So here, since I'm on Mastodon, I've set it up to "always show", because it was unusable with all sorts of things under CW.

So I sometimes see some unwanted porn or trash things because of too many CW :S

Luna Lactea

@tisha @ShadowJonathan I haven't had any usability issues, I can just click to unroll the post. Pictures with eye contact get a content warning because it makes alot of people uncomfortable, especially autistic people & other neurodivergent people that find it difficult, which makes up the majority of fediverse users since they're not welcome anywhere else.

Luna Lactea

@ShadowJonathan Filters also don't work on euphemisms. Someone trying to filter "penis" isn't going to add "our little friend" or "thingy" to the filter because that's incredibly fucking stupid. Stop using euphemisms, start communicating clearly.

emberquill :v_gf:

@ShadowJonathan my uspol filter has 24 keywords so far and it only catches maybe 30% of the posts that show up on my timeline because I don't have the mental energy to keep updating it.

Sure doesn't help that some people censor words and break filters entirely, because they never broke the habit of doing that on corporate social media.

I might just log out of Mastodon entirely from September to March because social media is always unbearable during US elections.

GwenTheKween - Find me @kitsunes.club, I don't see anything here

@ShadowJonathan also, sometimes I want to engage with stuff sometimes I don't.

I don't know if I can deactivate filters, but even if I can, it could be that I'm in a day where I don't wanna deal with stuff, but last time I wanted to, and I'm flash banged with un-CWd stuff before I can reactivate the filter

CWs are just so much better

Autumn (Lil Break + Going Away)
@ShadowJonathan i can't properly use filters so if you post / boost uncw-ed pol (or similar) then straight into the "fuck youβ„’" pile :>
