a siemens cnc hmi thing with a membrane keypad consisting of a 4x6 grid of buttons, in order: G, N, O, P, X, Z, U, W, I, K, C, R, M, S, T, L, F, D, H, B, shift, control, alt, space, with other keys under a layer. there is another 3x7 cluster with a numpad and symbols, and other miscellaneous keys below

@chfour Is there any story for this?

It's ortholinear, so unlikely to follow typewriters, and I don't recognize it being based on letter frequency of languages I know (while the first row is a video game name).

Unless these are commands that just look like letters.

@lukyan @chfour Iā€˜m guessing this is just designed for G-Code where most common Letters are G, X, Y, Z, M, I, J or something like that

@tsia_ @chfour So commands that look like letters, or Etaoin shrdlu-style frequent letters first keyboard. Reasonable (and completely alien with no knowledge of CNC).
