Every time some fiction says that something is "beyond science" I get so pettily pissy about it. Science isn't a body of knowledge or a single model of the world, science is a systematized process by which we determine what is and is not true and develop and refine models of the world through iterative testing of hypotheses. Anything that can be observed and has any pattern at all (even a randomized or changing pattern) can be explored scientifically given enough time. If we were to discover "magic" tomorrow, within a few decades we'd have scientific theories of it (and people would probably stop calling it magic).
